Artist Statement
I went to Canterbury College of Art and took a degree in Graphic Design and then went on to work in book publishing, first in
lay-out and design and then children’s book illustration.
Nowadays, I work as a painter and print maker from my converted cow shed studio in E Sussex. I draw my inspiration from
the garden and landscape I see from my window, as well as places further afield…..the South Downs, Scotland, London,
wherever I happen to be
The tradition of English romantic landscape painting is a great inspiration to me; Samuel Palmer, Turner, Paul Nash, Eric
Ravilious and above all, Ivon Hitchens. I’m also fascinated by the power of colour to create mood and meaning and therefore
always look to Matisse and Howard Hodgkins.
I aim to evoke atmosphere and feeling by pin pointing a moment in time and place, working from memory and imagination as
well as sketches and notes made out of doors on the spot. I enjoy the play of media and colour combinations and the
unexpected effects that result from the “happy accident”, believing that the spontaneous and unselfconscious can be more
expressive and genuine that the carefully controlled.
